Captain Henry Jackson's Radio Experiments

 
The group of vessels which formed the HMS Defiance Torpedo School, off Wearde Quay, Saltash, when Captain Henry Jackson was in command, 1895-1897. Some of Jackson's experiments involved a gunboat, HMS Scourge (a tender to Defiance), making radio transmissions while steaming up the Lynher estuary for a distance of two miles, and down the Hamoaze for three miles.

In that year he completed his experiments in wireless telegraphy, and demonstrated continuous communication with another vessel up to three miles away. He also set up a permanent radio link between Defiance and Admiralty House at Mount Wise, Devonport.
